Here’s a practical guide to steel fabrication lead times in Sydney and how to plan your programme accordingly.
In construction, steel is often a critical path item. The structural frame can’t go up until the steel is on site. The staircase can’t be installed until the stringers arrive. The mezzanine floor can’t be commissioned until fabrication and installation are complete. Any slip in steel fabrication timing can cascade through your entire programme.
Understanding typical lead times and what affects them is essential for any builder or project manager working with structural steel.

The clock on fabrication doesn’t start when you place an enquiry, or even when you accept a quote. It starts when the shop drawings have been produced, reviewed by your structural engineer and formally approved.
This is one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of steel fabrication timelines. The drawing production and approval process can take anywhere several weeks for a complex commercial structure.
Programme tip: Add the following to your critical path:
1. Late or incomplete drawings The most common cause of programme delays is drawings arriving at the fabricator late or without sufficient information to begin detailing. The earlier and more completely you can provide drawings, the better.
2. Slow engineer approvals Shop drawings need to be reviewed and approved by your structural engineer before fabrication can start. If the engineer is slow to respond to the shop drawing review, fabrication is delayed accordingly.
3. Last-minute design changes If architectural or structural changes are made after shop drawings have been produced or worse, after fabrication has started rework is required. Every revision adds time.
4. Non-standard material requirements Most structural steel sections are held in stock by steel distributors and are available within a few days. But some non-standard grades, sizes or lengths need to be specially ordered adding weeks to material procurement.
5. Workshop loading Like any trade, fabrication workshops have capacity limits. Busy periods can push lead times out. Booking your fabrication slot as early as possible ideally when you place the order, not when you need the steel gives you the best chance of hitting your programme.
1. Engage your fabricator early Don’t wait until the programme says “steel required” before you contact your fabricator. Engage them at the time of placing the structural engineering order so they’re aware of your project and timeline.
2. Issue drawings promptly Issue structural and architectural drawings to your fabricator as soon as they’re available even in draft or preliminary form. This allows the fabricator to start planning and raise any queries well before the drawing approval stage.
3. Chase the engineer approval Shop drawings sitting in an engineer’s inbox waiting for approval are fabrication days you’re burning. Monitor the approval process and follow up promptly.
4. Build float into your programme Steel is structural it’s not something you can easily work around if it’s late. Build realistic float into your programme for the steel supply chain: extra days for material procurement, drawing revisions and delivery.
5. Use a fabricator who also installs Using a single supplier for fabrication and installation removes the scheduling risk of coordinating two separate contractors. Your fabricator knows when the steel is ready and can schedule installation accordingly.
