1. Stringer Type The stringer is the structural backbone of your staircase, and the type you choose has a significant impact on cost. A mono stringer (single central beam) uses less steel and is popular for contemporary residential designs. Double or box stringers require more material and fabrication time, and are standard for commercial and industrial applications.
2. Number of Steps and Rise Height The more steps, the more steel, the more fabrication time. A short 6 step access stair for a mezzanine platform will cost considerably less than a 16 step residential staircase spanning two full storeys.
3. Tread Type Anti-slip grating treads, checker plate, galvanised steel and custom fabricated treads all come at different price points. Timber treads on a steel stringer frame add the cost of the timber supply and finishing on top of the steel fabrication.
4. Handrails and Balustrades A simple tubular steel handrail is the most cost effective option. Glass panel infills, decorative balustrades and stainless steel post systems all increase the cost. Every metre of handrail adds to the total.
5. Surface Finish Primer only, paint, hot-dip galvanising, powder coat the specified finish affects both materials cost and turnaround time. For outdoor stairs, galvanising is recommended and is worth the investment for long-term performance.
6. Complexity of Design A straight-run stair with a single landing is the most straightforward and most economical. L shaped, U shaped or spiral staircases involve more complex detailing, more fabrication time and higher cost.
7. Supply Only vs Supply and Install If you’re supplying steel stairs for a builder or carpenter to install themselves, you’ll pay for fabrication and delivery only. A full supply and install service where the fabricator manages both will cost more, but saves coordination effort and shifts installation responsibility to one party.
