Steel detailing is the process of producing precise technical drawings called shop drawings and erection drawings that translate a structural engineer’s design into fabrication and installation instructions.
Think of it like this: a structural engineer designs the staircase or frame and specifies what the steel needs to do (how much load to carry, what sections to use, how connections should work). The steel detailer translates that design into the exact instructions that tell the fabrication workshop how to cut, drill, weld and prepare every individual piece.
